When a religious person asked Jesus who he was required to love Jesus answered by telling a story that would have been considered scandalous.  The typical good guy was cast as the bad guy.  The most hated person was made to be a hero.  Jesus told this story to challenge those who were listening to love with reckless abandonment.

This parable will challenge each of us to live a life of love for God and others in a way that is neither easy nor comfortable.

Life is not fair.  Most of us know that from experience.  The question is, “What has that thinking done to our attitude?”  We tend to see all the things others have or get that we don’t have.  But what if there is something else for us to look at and focus on that would affect our perspective?  This is another “Story with a Punch”–it hurts a bit.  In this parable, Jesus challenges our way of looking at “stuff,” and it helps us focus on something that will reshape our attitudes.

Once in a while when reviewing a prayer list I wonder, “How many years has that request been on there?”  I am tempted to just hit the reset button and start with a blank sheet.  I just get tired of praying for the same stuff all the time.  It just doesn’t seem to change anything.

In this parable, Jesus actually makes a contrast between the story itself and reality.  It is geared for people who get tired of praying.  That’s us!

What has been on your list for years? Is it time to take it off?

Jesus says, “Follow me.”  God the Father says, “I want your heart.”

Sounds like a simple invitation to accept, but it’s not!  Every so often during His time on earth, Jesus had to remind the casual disciple of the true cost.

Two stories help us realize how important it is to plan ahead for this Christian life stuff.  And it does cost. . . a lot!

We’ve all been there.  We don’t want the perpetrator to get off the hook!  Especially because “he hurt me!”  And we shove the hurt deep into the recesses of our souls hoping it won’t show up again.

Wrong move!  Jesus considers an unforgiving spirit a big deal.  It is so important that our willingness to show mercy is a primary mark of our Christianity!  In fact, God the Father is so full of compassion and mercy that He cannot accept those who have no compassion or mercy.  Wow!

We are calling the parables “Stories with a Punch.”  When those hanging around Jesus heard Him say, “I have a story for you,” it usually came with a piercing application for the listeners.

The story of the two guys praying at “church” is no exception.  But it is really not about how to pray–rather about one of the huge obstructions to prayer.  So, if we expect to connect with God we need to get this right!

What punch do you feel when you hear this story?

Are you part of the Sandwich Generation, sandwiched between aging parents and raising your own children or mentoring your adult children? The demands of caring for the elderly can be almost unbearable. Added to the stress of normal living is caring for aging parents, even from a long distance.

How do we relate to those with grey hair?  How do we teach our children to respect grandma and grandpa, even when they can’t hear and keep telling the same old stories?

What does God say about honoring our elders?  Honor them, and never forget!

Len Sweet once wrote that “it is almost impossible to have a healthy family without having a healthy marriage.” His quote makes sense; as marriages struggle, so do families.

Perhaps this is why the New Testament speaks more to the issue of marriages than it does to parenting. God knows that one of the basic keys to having a “Sacred Family” is having a healthy marriage. But what does a healthy marriage look like?

Hold on as we dive into 1 Peter 3:1-7 and learn about God’s perspective concerning a healthy marriage.

It has become an obsession with some–”What legacy will I leave?”  We wonder what impact our lives will have on this earth after we are gone.  There is little debate–it has to do with the spiritual family we leave behind.  Most of us desperately want our “physical family” to become our “spiritual family”.  We want to pass along our faith.

But how does it happen?

Just before the Jewish people invaded the new country, Moses gave some specific directions about how to pull that off.  His instructions are worth our attention.

A few years ago, a poll by the Los Angeles Times asked more than 2000 adults what their main goal was in life.  The overwhelming answer–”to be happily married.”

The pressure to “marry well” is intense.  For many, the choice of a marriage partner may have been decided long ago.  Others may not even want to review the process.

The choice of a mate is the single most crucial factor in surviving the American family, and it often gets minimal attention!  So how can we, as a family of followers of Jesus, minimize the risk factor for those who will still make that decision?  What does the Bible say?
