I have a death certificate. I hope you have one too. If you don’t have a death certificate, then you will not be the kind of Christ follower that God is counting on.

In Romans 6, Paul is telling us that we have been forgetful. We have forgotten that when we became a Christian, we died to our past and died to our sin. What do you do with dead things? You bury them!!

Remember when you got baptized? That baptismal tank was a tomb, and when you went under the water, you died! But you didn’t stay buried—you came up from the water a new person to live a new life.

Sometimes we need to be reminded.

Jesus was under fire. He was accused of breaking the Sabbath and of blasphemy. These were very serious charges, and warranted the death penalty. He was in big trouble.

To defend himself, Jesus turned to the big guns. He brought in the testimony of four major witnesses that would substantiate His claim to be equal with God.

His enemies thought they knew the Word of God, but they did not know the God of the Word! You can know the Bible and still not know the Savior. Since Jesus is at the center of God’s plan, then He needs to be at the center of our lives as well.

He is the hero of the Easter story. He dies but he wins.

Today there is much confusion over this guy. Great teacher? Nice person? Revolutionary? Two thousand years ago, while he was on earth, the same questions came up.

But his own statements were clear. And he made it impossible for people to accept him merely as a good man.

What do you believe? Really! Have you crossed over from death to life? It all depends!

Jesus didn’t heal everybody, not even everybody he came in contact with. Not only that, each person he physically healed eventually got sick again and ultimately died! Wonderful!

But when Jesus did the miraculous it spoke volumes about who he was. And it made a huge difference to the recipient! The eventual target, however, was not just a lame body, but also the soul.

Do you think Jesus can overcome the barriers to your healing?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have Jesus walk alongside you and directly point out the things he really wants you to see?

His interactions with the likes of Nicodemus and the woman at the well give us great insight about what Jesus really sees when he looks around.

Turns out he knows it all, loves deeply, and then picks the least likely to fulfill his divine purposes.

Who is the greatest person in the Bible? Jesus answered that question when he said, “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist.” (Matthew 11:1)

John was a great man in many ways. Everything about him demanded attention: his dress, his message, his boldness, his lifestyle. Yet the true measure of his greatness lay in his humility.

When John met Jesus, things changed. He pulled back and declared, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” (John 3:30) In that statement lays the meaning of true greatness in the kingdom. If you’re not pointing people to Jesus, then YOU are standing in the way!

In our culture it seems like there ought to be many ways to get to God. Don’t all “sincere” roads lead us to heaven?

Let’s look at what Jesus says in John 3. What does it mean to “believe?” What does it mean to be “born again?”

Come with your Bibles and hearts open to hear what Jesus said to Nicodemus.

The kinds of things Jesus pulled off were impressive–to a lot of people, both then and now. Some might even “believe.” We understand the Bible to be clear that “believing” is all that’s necessary.

But sometimes such faith comes up short. And NOW is the best time to discover that!

So we enter into a private conversation between Jesus and a credible Jewish leader. Nicodemus’ faith is not enough. Jesus explains what he really needs. And it’s the same for us!

It’s a great illustration of “righteous indignation.” Jesus was angry with the condition of the temple. He let it show and it made an impact. Artists throughout church history have attempted to depict the scene.

“Go get ‘em, Jesus!” is our typical response. Those businesses of exploitation and extortion deserved to be trashed!

Then we dig deeper. We discover the real story is about us. And it is related to our answers to a couple of simple questions: “Why did you come to church today?” and “What did you bring?”

Ouch!
