When we ask people to tell their faith story, we encourage them to describe life without Christ, and then life with Him.  Often the life “B.C.” is hard to articulate.  It may be ancient history or perhaps pushed out of their “selective memory.”

But for us to appreciate the grace of God, we need to review where we once were.  What does God say about that life “B.C.”?  Frankly, it’s not a pretty picture–dark and depraved–but true of every one of us!

Perhaps there are times you recall when the light bulb finally came on and a concept you had been struggling with became clear–long division, gravity, the light of the moon, calculus, chord charts, playing “Angry Birds.”

Paul’s letters to us include such truths, but on the spiritual level.  As such, they are deeply important for us to grasp.  But with our limited understanding, when we can’t fathom them all, which ones are key?

As Paul prays for the believers in Ephesus, he articulates the main ones.  Do you get them?

The moment we understand God, we cease to worship Him.  But for eternity, we will keep trying to figure Him out and we’ll continue worshiping!

So, as we crack the door to the priceless treasures in Ephesians, we discover that the entire Trinity has been, is, and will be involved in our lives, personally!  It is truth virtually impossible to grasp, yet encouraging to us.  We get just a glimpse of why God does what He does, and how that affects our lives here and now.

Let’s peek with reverence and godly fear.

If you are trying to take new territory for Jesus, you will face opposition!  Perhaps the challenge is in your own life, the life of your family, the life of our church, or maybe even globally.

Every Ephesian who became a follower of Jesus knew the hardship of that step of faith.  The context of Paul’s letter to the church in that boom town reminds us that the Christian life is a spiritual battle–powerful and difficult!  The beginning of the church in Ephesus was painful!

In our computer age, we have learned how to treat the machine when it malfunctions…just hold the three keys at the same time!  The theory is that such a sequence of keys could not possibly happen by the chance strokes of a youngster or novice.

That combination has gotten many a user out of “lock up”!  In fact, it has come to mean “dump” or “do away with.”

At this New Year, we have the opportunity to get rid of junk from 2011 and “reboot” our spiritual lives.  Do you need it??  Communion reminds us of how that works.

It all started in Bethlehem.  The days were filled with corruption and chaos.  And Naomi’s family was not exempt from the darkness.

Out of the ashes of spent hopes and broken dreams, came a “man of standing” and a “woman of noble character.”  It turns out God is moving behind the scenes to set things up for the arrival of the baby in the manger a millennium later…but the people in the moment didn’t know that.

For them, and us, it is a story of unexplainable, undeserved, unexpected divine favor–an example for us to follow!

Naomi and Ruth were between the proverbial “rock and a hard place.”  They faced challenges that would affect them for the rest of their lives, barriers that seemed insurmountable.

God was at work behind the scenes–and most of us would admit that much for our own lives–but what did the players out front need to do to solve the dilemma?

Imagine something so shocking, so contrary to acceptable behavior, that it makes the front pages of the magazines in the grocery store checkout lines.  (It seems to be ordinary fare for most news broadcasts these days.)  We would call it “scandalous!”

Now apply that same adjective to an act of love that is beyond all explanation–especially when granted to a couple of forlorn widows who, in return, have absolutely zero to offer.  Sounds interesting!
