Text: John 3:22-26
Who is the greatest person in the Bible? Jesus answered that question when he said, “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist.” (Matthew 11:1)
John was a great man in many ways. Everything about him demanded attention: his dress, his message, his boldness, his lifestyle. Yet the true measure of his greatness lay in his humility.
When John met Jesus, things changed. He pulled back and declared, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” (John 3:30) In that statement lays the meaning of true greatness in the kingdom. If you’re not pointing people to Jesus, then YOU are standing in the way!

In our culture it seems like there ought to be many ways to get to God. Don’t all “sincere” roads lead us to heaven?
Let’s look at what Jesus says in John 3. What does it mean to “believe?” What does it mean to be “born again?”
Come with your Bibles and hearts open to hear what Jesus said to Nicodemus.

The kinds of things Jesus pulled off were impressive–to a lot of people, both then and now. Some might even “believe.” We understand the Bible to be clear that “believing” is all that’s necessary.
But sometimes such faith comes up short. And NOW is the best time to discover that!
So we enter into a private conversation between Jesus and a credible Jewish leader. Nicodemus’ faith is not enough. Jesus explains what he really needs. And it’s the same for us!

It’s a great illustration of “righteous indignation.” Jesus was angry with the condition of the temple. He let it show and it made an impact. Artists throughout church history have attempted to depict the scene.
“Go get ‘em, Jesus!” is our typical response. Those businesses of exploitation and extortion deserved to be trashed!
Then we dig deeper. We discover the real story is about us. And it is related to our answers to a couple of simple questions: “Why did you come to church today?” and “What did you bring?”
Ouch!

The name Lamb of God, which John the Baptizer gave to Jesus, had never been used before but it was full of meaning. Over the years hundreds of thousands of lambs had been sacrificed on the altars of the tabernacle and temple.
But it was all to end brutally, dramatically, simply and ultimately with the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. To take away the sins of the world. Our sins.
And Jesus asked us never to forget. Never–until he comes back to earth. We do communion to remember the Lamb of God.

Were you ever on the B Team? Ever miss the cut? Ever get lost in the shuffle? Ever doubt yourself?
Perhaps someone came along who believed in you—someone who saw the potential and pulled it out of you? What difference did that make in your life?
Those first disciples discovered that Jesus believed in them. They were nobodies, on the JV, just ordinary people. But Jesus chose them to be on His team, and they went on to change the world.
Do you want to be on Jesus’ team? To follow Jesus is to believe that Jesus believes in you.

After introducing Jesus as The Word, God in flesh, the author John begins to describe what turns out to be a rather strange character: this “baptizer” guy.
Contemporary word pictures of who this other John really was probably fall short. He was a mix of the odd and the honest, courageous and humble.
But at the very center of John’s character was an understanding of who he was. And who he was not! It made him particularly effective.
Now, what about you?

So, we read the gospel of John that we might believe. In Jesus.
But do we really ‘get it’ about the person of Jesus?
John does not begin softly. Rather, in the very first words from his pen, he stuns us and blows us away with the identity of this man who became flesh and dwelt among us. He doesn’t want anyone to misunderstand.
Do you believe in the Word?

Do you ever wonder? Wonder if all this Jesus stuff is really true?
There are good reasons to believe it all! And one of Jesus’ disciples, John, an insider, took care to describe events that would help us believe. Some of the details had never before been written down.
But what of this guy John? Is he credible? Does he understand us? Can we understand him, and hence, Jesus? Enough to believe?
