After introducing Jesus as The Word, God in flesh, the author John begins to describe what turns out to be a rather strange character: this “baptizer” guy.

Contemporary word pictures of who this other John really was probably fall short. He was a mix of the odd and the honest, courageous and humble.

But at the very center of John’s character was an understanding of who he was. And who he was not! It made him particularly effective.
